1920s Flying Curcus - Septmeber 2013

 Originally Posted - September 2013

Several weeks ago I stumbled upon a flyer for a 1920s Flying Circus airshow at a local air museum. I printed it out and announced that no matter what I was attending. :-) It happened to the day before my birthday and I was very excited to see this! The thought of a 1920s/30s air show totally thrilled me - present something with historicness AND planes and you totally have me hooked. :-)

Side note - Every time I think of planes in the 1920s and 1920s beads - I think if this scene in Thoroughly Modern Millie.

The event did not disappoint. It really felt like (what I imagined it would feel like) a 1920s era air show. Tons of laughs, thrills, surprises, stunts, and just plan old fashioned fun.

1920s Summer Frock - September 2013

I only found out about the event a few weeks before. But I knew right away I could NOT attend without wearing 1920s clothing! But - there was a problem.....I had nothing wearable (not original) that I could wear. Earlier this year I was poking around and researching the era, so I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted. I also had the fabric that I wanted to use. The only problem was that I had planned to make a summer frock. The 14th of September is normally safe enough to sneak in wearing a summer frock for the last time for the season. So, I ran with the summer frock idea.

I was working on this gown for several days when Mumsie came to me asking if she could dress in 20s clothing as well. Within seconds I had a vision for Mumsie's outfit.  After a few set backs in the fabric department and lack of days (I had less than a week to draft, fit, create, etc), I had a "light bulb" moment!

USO Aprons- Part 2 (2012)

The Adventure Continues...

After we bought a very large amount of fabric and various sundries for the aprons,
we attacked the project with great enthusiasm. Autumn and I split the piles of
white and blue fabric, washed and ironed it, and then had a cutting out party.
Four women with shears and rotary cutters - watch out world! Everyone took
their allotted number of aprons to sew and off we went! In the end I believe
we had around 12 finished USO aprons by the WWII Weekend in June. Four
more are currently in the works

Here is what was seen for several months...white and blue and more white and blue!

USO Apron- Part 1 (2012)

I left my heart at the Stage Door Canteen
I left it there with a girl named Eileen

I kept her serving doughnuts

Till all she had were gone
I sat there dunking doughnuts
Till she caught on

I must go back to the army routine

And every doughboy knows what that will mean

A soldier boy without a heart

Has two strikes on him from the start
And my heart's at the Stage Door Canteen

One summer evening back in 2010, our 1940's group was sitting out under the stars watching Stage Door Canteen being projected on a screen. Lovely indeed and also inspiring. Each year during the WWII Weekend our group participates in various areas. Many from our group run and help at the Spider's Web Bar (more on that here)....us girls are the waitresses there. There was talk about turning our (the waitresses) focus on more of a USO theme (since we really can't justify us being on Guadalcanal :-) ). SO, while watching this movie....one of us (can't remember who) or maybe it hit all of us at once...thought...."WHOA! I LOVE those aprons - let's make our own aprons for the Spider's Web!"  We also read in passing about some of the local USO groups would have their own custom apron...unique to that particular town or organization.

So, the great USO Apron Project of 2011 began...

18th C. Clothing Workshop - 2010

After finally getting all the pictures of the day off our cameras....here is the long awaited part 2 of the 18th C. Clothing Workshop Posts. :)

The day of the workshop, we girls woke up very early and started the process of dressing and hairstyling. It does not take us as long as it use too....we are older now, more efficient in dressing, and so use to dressing now. :) We then finished loading up odds and ends and we were off.

When we arrived we dispersed and set off to accomplish the tasks that needed to be finished before our guests arrived.

After everyone arrived, registered, and was seated, we started. I covered, our site's history, basic local history, women's roles within the home and community.  We then moved on with Mae's talk on foundation garments, hairstyles and caps. Then to my topics gowns, hats and bonnets etc.

Our guests were wonderful listeners and asked some great questions. Our next workshop is already in the works and we are looking at July. Just enough time for Mae and I to rest up from this last one.

Now, for the pictures....
